2025 Consignment Policy

Effective Date: January 1 – December 31, 2025

1. Introduction

This policy outlines the terms and conditions under which The Lillooet Museum & Visitor Centre (“the Museum”) will accept and sell consigned goods (“Items”) in its retail shop. The Museum aims to provide a diverse and high-quality selection of merchandise that aligns with its mission and values, while also supporting local artists and craftspeople.

2. Eligibility and Selection

  • Alignment: Items must be consistent with the Museum’s mission, exhibitions, and overall aesthetic. Preference will be given to Items that reflect the history, culture, and environment of British Columbia.
  • Quality: Items must be of high quality, well-crafted, and in new or like-new condition.
  • Originality: Preference will be given to original works and unique designs.
  • Local Artists/Craftspeople: The Museum prioritizes working with artists and craftspeople residing in British Columbia.
  • Selection Process: The Museum’s Executive Director and/or designated staff will review all submissions and make final decisions regarding acceptance. The Museum reserves the right to refuse any Item without explanation.
  • Submission Requirements: Consignors must submit:
    • A detailed description of each Item, including materials, dimensions, and suggested retail price.
    • High-quality photographs of each Item.
    • A brief artist/craftsperson biography or statement.
    • Contact information, including name, address, phone number, and email address.

3. Consignment Agreement

  • Upon acceptance, a written consignment agreement (“Agreement”) will be executed between the Museum and the consignor (“Consignor”).
  • The Agreement will specify:
    • The Items accepted for consignment.
    • The agreed-upon retail price of each Item.
    • The Museum’s commission rate (see Section 4).
    • The consignment period (see Section 5).
    • Terms of payment (see Section 6).
    • Liability and insurance (see Section 7).
    • Termination of the Agreement (see Section 8).
    • Any other relevant terms.

4. Commission Rate

  • The Museum will retain a commission of 25% of the final retail sales price of each Item sold.
  • This percentage accounts for the costs of displaying, marketing, and selling the items.

5. Consignment Period

  • The initial consignment period will be two (2) months, commencing on the date the Item is placed on display.
  • The Museum may, at its discretion, extend the consignment period with the Consignor’s written consent.
  • Items not sold within the consignment period will be returned to the Consignor at their expense, or other arrangements can be made.

6. Payment

  • The Museum will provide the Consignor with a statement of sales and payment within 30 days following the end of each month.
  • Payment will be made via cheque, direct deposit or Internet e-transfer. 
  • The Consignor is responsible for providing accurate payment information.
  • All prices will be listed in Canadian Dollars.

7. Liability and Insurance

  • While the Museum will exercise reasonable care in handling and displaying consigned Items, it will not be held liable for loss or damage caused by fire, theft, vandalism, or other unforeseen circumstances, unless caused by the Museum’s gross negligence.
  • The Consignor is responsible for maintaining their own insurance coverage for the consigned Items.
  • The museum will take reasonable precautions to protect items.

8. Termination

  • Either party may terminate the Agreement with thirty (30) days written notice.
  • Upon termination, the Consignor is responsible for collecting their unsold Items within seven (7) days.
  • Items not collected within the specified timeframe may be disposed of or donated at the Museum’s discretion.
  • The Museum reserves the right to terminate the agreement immediately if the Consignor breaches the terms of this policy or the Agreement.

9. Pricing and Display

  • The Museum will determine the final retail price of each Item, taking into account the Consignor’s suggested retail price, market conditions, and the Museum’s pricing policies.
  • The Museum reserves the right to adjust retail prices as necessary.
  • The Museum will determine the display and placement of consigned Items within the retail shop.

10. Amendments

  • The Museum reserves the right to amend this policy at any time.
  • Consignors will be notified of any changes in writing.

11. Governing Law

  • This policy and the Agreement shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Province of British Columbia and the laws of Canada applicable therein.
