Product Placement Policy – Retail Shop 

Effective Date: January 1 – December 31, 2025

1. Introduction

The Lillooet Museum (“the Museum”) operates a retail shop to enhance the visitor experience and generate revenue to support its mission. This policy outlines the guidelines for product placement within the retail shop, ensuring that merchandise aligns with the Museum’s values, mission, and aesthetic, while providing a diverse and engaging selection for visitors.

2. Guiding Principles

  • Mission Alignment: Products must reflect the Museum’s mission, exhibitions, and educational programs, and enhance the visitor’s understanding of the Museum’s collections and themes.
  • Quality and Authenticity: Products must be of high quality, well-crafted, and, where applicable, authentic to the Museum’s subject matter.
  • Local and Indigenous Focus: Preference will be given to products created by local British Columbian artists, artisans, and Indigenous communities, reflecting the region’s cultural heritage.
  • Educational Value: Products should offer educational value and contribute to the visitor’s learning experience.
  • Visual Appeal: Products must be visually appealing and contribute to the overall aesthetic of the retail shop.
  • Ethical Sourcing: Products should be sourced ethically and sustainably, adhering to fair trade practices and environmental considerations.
  • Space Optimization: Product placement is subject to available space and the retail shop’s layout.
  • Financial Viability: Products must be commercially viable and contribute to the retail shop’s revenue goals.

3. Product Placement Criteria

The following criteria will be used to evaluate product placement within the retail shop:

  • Relevance to Museum Collections/Exhibitions: Products directly related to the Museum’s collections, exhibitions, and educational programs will be prioritized.
  • Originality and Uniqueness: Unique, handcrafted, or limited-edition items will be favored.
  • Quality of Materials and Craftsmanship: Products must be made from high-quality materials and exhibit excellent craftsmanship.
  • Packaging and Presentation: Products must be attractively packaged and presented.
  • Pricing: Products must be priced competitively and within a range that appeals to the Museum’s visitors.
  • Supplier Reputation: The supplier’s reputation for quality, reliability, and ethical practices will be considered.
  • Inventory Management: The supplier’s ability to maintain adequate inventory levels will be evaluated.

4. Product Placement Types

  • Display Shelving: Standard shelving for displaying books, gifts, and other merchandise.
  • Display Cases: Secure display cases for high-value or fragile items.
  • Wall Displays: Wall-mounted displays for artwork, posters, and other flat items.
  • Counter Displays: Countertop displays for impulse purchases and promotional items.
  • End Cap Displays: Prominent displays at the end of aisles to highlight featured products.
  • Seasonal Displays: Dedicated displays for seasonal merchandise and holiday items.

5. Application Process

  • Suppliers interested in placing products in the retail shop must submit a written application to the Executive Director of the Lillooet District Historical Society or designated staff.
  • The application should include:
    • A detailed description of the products, including materials, dimensions, and suggested retail price.
    • High-quality photographs of the products.
    • Information about the supplier, including their background, experience, and ethical practices.
    • Samples of the products (if requested).
    • Terms of sale, including wholesale pricing, payment terms, and return policies.
  • The Executive Director and/or designate will review applications and make decisions based on the criteria outlined in this policy.
  • The Museum reserves the right to refuse any application without explanation.
  • A consignment or wholesale agreement will be required for approved product placements.

6. Placement Fees and Commissions

  • The Museum may charge a placement fee or commission on sales, depending on the type of product and the agreement with the supplier.
  • Fees and commissions will be determined by the Lillooet Museum and outlined in the agreement.

7. Limitations and Restrictions

  • The Museum reserves the right to limit the number of products displayed from any one supplier.
  • The Museum may remove products that are deemed inappropriate, no longer relevant, or not selling well.
  • The Museum does not guarantee the sale of any placed products.
  • Products that promote violence, hate speech, or discrimination are strictly prohibited.

8. Review and Amendments

  • This policy will be reviewed periodically and may be amended as necessary.
  • Suppliers with existing product placements will be notified of any changes.
